The predominance of agglomeration around Miskolc and the mass of small and dwarf villages characterize the County’s settlement structure. The number of the settlements is one and a half times more than the country average. 25% of the population lives in Miskolc, and nearly the quarter of the population live in the County’s other 23 cities, the population of 34% of the settlements does not reach 500 persons.

The County is one of the most varied one in Hungary concerning its climatic, geographical and natural features. Due to its location it belongs to the Northern Middle Mountain Chain being rich in natural resources. Its north part has a mountainous or hilly character, being divided by valleys and basins, its southern part is a plain. Its highest points can be found in Mountain Bükk with 959 m and in Mountain Zemplén with 896 m.

The County’s more important towns are Miskolc, Ózd, Kazincbarcika, Mezőkövesd, Tiszaújváros és Sátoraljaújhely, in these towns the industrial activity is very pregnant. On border-line of Mountain Zemplén and the Great Hungarian Plain Sátoraljaújhely, Sárospatak, Szerencs and Tokaj make a chain of historical towns. These towns are parts of the wine-district of Tokaj. The other little towns have basically agricultural nature with village conditions.
